STEP 1: SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION
Applications are only accepted in person at the Miami County Animal Shelter. Applications must be received before having a meet-and-greet with any of our adoptable dogs. You can also print and complete your application at home to save time during your visit to the Shelter.
We are passionate about finding the right home for our pets so each application is carefully reviewed for compliance with our guidelines. Due to processing times, we may be unable to review your application on the same day it is submitted.
As part of our review process, we will:
- Conduct a background check: To protect our animals, applications will not be approved if anyone in the household has been involved in a violent crime against a person or animal.
- Confirm your housing status: You don't have to be a homeowner to qualify for adoption. However, we must speak with the landlord/homeowner to confirm that pets are permitted where you live and that there are no weight limitations or breed restrictions. Confirming homeownership through the Miami County Auditor's website is a standard part of our review process.
- Ask about other dogs in your home: We will contact your current veterinarian to confirm the health records of any other dogs in your household. We are not able to approve adoption applications for opposite-sex, intact dogs if you currently own an unaltered dog.
STEP 2: FIND YOUR PERFECT FIT
Now that your application has been approved, it's time to find the right fit for you and your adopted dog with the help of one of our friendly staff members.
- We recommend arriving at least one hour before the Shelter's closing time as this process can take a while. Also consider visiting outside the peak hours of 3 pm - 4 pm on weekdays and 11 am - Noon on Saturdays.
- Interact with our adoptable dogs in the interior visitation room or the outdoor Recreation and Socialization Pavilion.
- Carefully consider the dog's temperament, energy level, and specific needs to ensure a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship for both of you.
- We strongly recommend you bring any dogs living in your home to meet the dog you wish to adopt.
- Our adoptable animals are adopted on a first-come, first-served basis from approved applications.
Important note about spaying/neutering: We work with local veterinarians to spay/neuter as many of the dogs as possible before adoption, though this may not always be possible. If your adopted dog is not spayed or neutered at the time of adoption, you will receive a $30 certificate to help with the cost of the procedure with a Miami County veterinarian of your choice. All unaltered dogs must be spayed or neutered within 45 days of adoption or by 7 months of age for our younger adoptees.
