What list are jurors names drawn from?
This court summons jurors from the list of registered voters in the county. However, Ohio law allows for jurors to be summoned from the list of registered voters in the county or jurors may be summoned from a combined list of registered voters and licensed drivers in the county.
What is the difference between a Petit Juror and Grand Juror?
A grand juror decides whether a person should be placed on trial for a criminal offense. A petit juror decides if the defendant is guilty or not guilty in a criminal trial. In a civil trial, the petit jury will decide the facts which are in dispute.
Will I be reporting for jury duty all month?
No, you are eligible to be summoned during your assigned month.
How many days will I be on jury duty?
The average trial length is two to three days. Some jury trials last longer.
How do I know when to report?
A summons will be mailed to you. It will tell you the exact date and time to report.
When does the trial begin?
On the date you report for jury duty, a jury will be selected. The trial begins as soon as a jury has been selected.
I have a medical and or work problem and can’t serve jury duty. What do I need to do?
All requests for excuse from jury duty must be submitted in writing. The judge will review your request and you will be notified of his decision.
I can’t serve as a juror at this time of the year. Can I serve later in the year?
Depending on your circumstances, the judge may allow you to serve later in the year.
What is the age limit for jurors?
You must be eighteen years of age.
What are the court’s requirements for juror?
You must be a resident and registered voter of Miami County who is at least eighteen years of age, who has never been convicted of a felony.
How late in the day will I be in court?
The court is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Once you are seated on a case, the judge will consider the jurors and parties schedule before deviating from the normal court hours.
Will I have to spend the night away from home when I’m listening to a trial?
No, we do not sequester jurors overnight.
Where do I park?
The court does NOT provide parking. The best area to park is one or more blocks south of the Safety Building. This is a residential area with no parking meters.
How much do I get paid for jury duty and when will I receive it?
Petit jurors seated on a trial are paid $40.00 per day. After the tenth day, the pay increases to $80.00 per day. However, if you report, are not seated, and released before noon you will be paid $20.00.
Grand jurors are paid $40.00 per day regardless of the number of days they report.
A check will be mailed to your residence during the first part of the month following your jury service.
My employer needs a letter telling how much I will be paid for jury service. Where do I get the letter?
The Clerk of Courts office which is located on the third floor of the Safety Building will provide you with the letter. |
